Keeping the Flame Lit – Eve & Eddie Bushman
It was at a disco, back in the early 1980’when the two met. He asked her to dance, and she said…no.
The story doesn’t end there, though. In fact, it was just beginning.
“My friends told me I should go and dance with him, so I finally did,” states Eve Bushman. “At the end of the night, we walked outside together and he asked me out on a date. And, as I have always had a knack for bravado, I said something along the lines of, ‘What? I don’t even know what you really look like yet!’” Just moments later, she pulled up his shirt, took a gander, was more than satisfied, said yes, and agreed to meet Eddie a week later.
After a couple of years, the two decided to marry. “We broke up for a brief time, but he kept calling me every night, and one of those nights, he stopped by to pick up his stuff, and never left. The next day, I pulled out the fireman’s calendar (Eddie works for the fire department) and we picked out a date.”
And that date happened to be June 14, 1986.
The two became husband and wife in Eddie’s mother’s backyard in North Hollywood. On a budget, they covered the pool to create a dance floor and spent most of the funds on photography. “It was a great party,” states Eve.
Eddie and Eve moved to the Santa Clarita Valley that same year, and have since been involved with many events that go on in the community. Eve, who also writes a wine column for élite Magazine, has been involved with wine education for nearly two decades, often lending support to local non-profit organization wine events. “Any non profit that is having a wine event is marketed for free by Eve’s Wine 101 Consulting. Once, sometimes up to three times a year, we will lend support to a non-profit to plan and market their event.”
Eddie serves as a Fire Chief, Urban Search and Rescue Team Leader and Swift Water Rescue Team Leader. “He is an active member of our community,” states Eve, “but more of the LAX community where he normally works as a Battalion Chief. He jokes with me about community as he says that is his job description, serving the community. With that said, if he is home and we are doing an event, you will find him volunteering his time, wine and smile, right there with me.”
Both busy serving the community, the two still manage to find time for each other. “If it were up to me, the dating pool would be swimming with firefighters,” states Eve. “With their schedule, there is ample time for what most people refer to as, ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’. So when we’re together, we make the most of our time together: family dinners, movie nights, wine events, wine trips…and at night, we always hold hands as we fall asleep.”
“I love my wife for her loyalty, her parenting of our daughter Samantha, and because she always keeps me entertained,” states Eddie.
“The morals that his mother raised Eddie with, and what the fire department instills in its members, are awe-inspiring to me,” states Eve. “I never tire of bragging about my man.”
