The Magic of Wildflour – One local baker makes life even sweeter
There comes a time in every child’s life when dessert takes on a kind of magic. Usually, that sweet mystery wafts in from the kitchen, piques your curiosity and leads you tiptoeing up behind a cooking family member. As you try to discover the source of that tempting, sugary scent, you are distracted and hypnotized by something else: the methodical process of baking, the happy concentration in each step, the delicate touch of a master baker at work. There is magic in dessert, you realize: it’s love.
“I have wonderful childhood memories of helping in the kitchen, licking the batter from the ‘sacred beater,’ or peering into a bakery from the street – just to get a glimpse of the treats our mother forbade before dinner,” remembers Jill Friedman, founder of Wildflour Gourmet Baking Company. “I spent much of my childhood on my tiptoes, helping my Nana make her deliciously decadent desserts. Nothing could interfere with my fascination of what was being created just two inches above my head.”
To Jill, baking should never lose it’s magic, whether you’re starting from scratch or relying on the help of your local baker. So when she launched her company, she knew the main ingredient always had to be love. That’s the difference with Wildflour Gourmet Baking Company: Every product from this homegrown local bakery is made with the same thoughtful love and devotion as your most cherished childhood memories from the kitchen.
“As the years went by and I grew a little taller, I was able to observe the care with which my grandmother created each of her special treats,” Jill said. “Today, I aim to bring the same devotion and care from my kitchen to yours.”
Specializing in gourmet gifts and dessert catering, Wildflour delivers your orders right to your door or venue and caters to anyone with a sweet tooth. During the holidays and year-round, Jill provides tastes worth celebrating during any family or corporate affair.
“With menus that cater to the individual or group, we are priced to fit any budget for any occasion,” Jill said.
Popular items include customizable gift baskets perfect for anyone from a big business partner to a friend who needs a reason to smile. Maybe you just want something sweet to sink your teeth into at the end of a long day. Wildflour has all the homemade goodies you need, including her signature “Flour Child” Luxurious Layered Cake Pushpops!
“It’s like a cupcake you can take on the go,” she explained with a smile.
Layers of cake and frosting fill up a container reminiscent of the refreshing treat you yearned for during childhood on a very hot day, and it seals up completely – so you can carry your sweet goodness on the go! Both adult and kid friendly, they are perfect for party favors, impromptu gifts or dessert tables, and they freeze and thaw beautifully. And don’t worry, “Flour Child” layered push pops come in 14 flavors so no one has to miss out on their favorite.
Better yet, Wildflour uses only the best quality ingredients. All of Jill’s cocoa and preserves are imported from top chocolatiers and pastry-driven companies across the world, including Belgium and France. For a chocoholic like Jill, only the world’s finest will do.
“I just wanted different flavors than the ones we’re used to here,” she said. “I like that the chocolate I purchase overseas isn’t made with additives or preservatives, and it melts so much better! I love chocolate, and I love to share that with the world.”
What else does Jill love? Cookie dough. Ask anyone who’s tasted it – your first bite of Jill’s cookie dough will not be your last. Packed with chips and other ingredients that stand up to Jill’s taste test, her cookie dough is made so carefully it’s safe to eat straight from tub.
“You’re welcome,” she said before letting out her contagious laugh.
Jill does more than pay her customers back in good spirit and delicious hugs, however; when not found in the kitchen, Jill is out supporting the community that supports her. An active volunteer, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Repertory East Playhouse and was a dedicated member of JCI Santa Clarita, being named SCV’s 40 Under Forty and Outstanding Young Californian in 2007. She has also been a consistent supporter of The Michael Hoefflin Foundation and Child & Family Center.
And today, she can think of nothing else she’d rather do than live among the magic of a warm kitchen.
“It’s always been a way for me to be expressive and creative and give back,” she said. “I just love watching the look on someone’s face when they try something I’ve made. A smile is probably the highest compliment I could be given.”
