Santa Clarita resident Patricia Bosdet was born in 1930 in Winnipeg, Canada. Of Irish and Scottish decent, Patricia had one sister and brother and was very involved in the community. Growing up, she and her family often gathered at auxiliary meetings to support the British troops during World War II.
It was at that time when she discovered a love for knitting. “My grandfather, who was a World War I veteran and fought in France helped teach me how to knit. We would knit scarves, mitts, and socks,” says Patricia.
Actively involved in her church, Patricia continued her philosophy of sharing and giving back by working at blood donor clinics and assisting with transportation for children at the orphanages. “We would give the children from the orphanage a bus ride or take them to get ice cream cones. They were only five cents each at the time.”
Patricia later married and had two boys. Tired of the cold weather in Winnipeg, she and her family relocated to the United States…to sunny California.
“My husband left to start his job in Long Beach, and I followed several months later with our two boys. It was my first airplane trip.” The Bosdets soon settled down to enjoy their new life, meet new friends and take in all that beautiful Southern California had to offer. Patricia continued her values for giving back, and became active in church groups, community meetings, social clubs and eventually City Chairman for the Cancer Crusade.
In 1998, Patricia made her way to Valencia and became actively involved in the churches and clubs in the SCV. She also joined the Blue Star Mothers group to support troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. She is also involved with Mes Amies, supporting local non-profit organizations. With a history of helping others, Patricia continues to help others, but her efforts are now assisting many groups adied by the Special Olympics. “I am just amazed at what these kids can do with a little help.”
How does she help? “I knit. And all my projects earn money to support Special Olympics.”
From afghans to dishclothes, wraps and more, all her beautiful handmade items are sold to help children with special needs.
That old adage, “Tis better to give than to receive” is true after all. Thank you, Patricia, for making the world a better place, one knitted creation at a time.
