Modern Boudoir Photography Captures a New View
Boudoir photography has been described as: a photographic style featuring intimate, romantic, and sometimes erotic images of its subjects, primarily intended for the private enjoyment of the subject or their romantic partner.
“We find more often that our boudoir customers want to bring out a part of their inner self, their inner spirit to imagery that they can keep intimately theirs, or share (gift) to a special partner. This is not their public persona, sometimes that inner-sexy is gently angelic or devilishly edgy, sometimes it’s both,” says Michael Asmar, owner, Joie de Vivre Photographie.
Modern boudoir photography dates from the mid 1980s onwards, and is characterized by the empowerment of its female subjects, who now were typically the photographer’s direct clients rather than being hired models.
“Just because you’re shooting boudoir doesn’t mean you have to put on the skimpiest piece of lingerie,” said Lindsay Schlick, owner, SchlickArt. “A black dress works, too. There are many styles of boudoir – from tee shirts to fur coats. We’ll accentuate the bits you like and flatter the bits you don’t like,” Lindsay said.
The one big piece of advice I can offer is: Splurge for the hair and makeup and wear proper fitted undergarments. There is no better feeling in the world than when your supported! Just like your wedding day, these are photos you will look back on throughout the years. Go the extra mile and indulge yourself!
“I would have to agree because boudoir photography is such an intimate session, having a properly fitted garment will encourage your ability to be comfortable in front of the camera. One of my favorite things to hear, and see, is the immediate confidence boost that women feel when their foundation pieces fit well! This confidence shows in the photographs and carries through in your daily life!” – Lisa Szeto, owner, Pinned Up.
