| Assistance League founder, Anne Banning, always felt that it was fine to serve youth, but better to let youth serve. So in the 1930’s she called on the daughters and granddaughters of Assistance League members to assist in various philanthropic projects. Today, the Assistance League proudly continues to encourage and provide volunteer opportunities for today’s youth. Assisteens membership is open to young people in grades seven to 12. The aims of participation are to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, personal responsibility, poise, public speaking and leadership skills. In Santa Clarita, Assisteens participate in various fundraising and philanthropic events under the guidance of Assistance League Coordinator, Durinda Evanoff. Teens perform community service by volunteering at the Assistance League Resale Shop, dressing teddy bears for the Teddy Bear Patrol program, and helping children in need through the Operation School Bell program. In addition, our local teens have attended National Assisteens Conferences. Last fall, they participated in the City of Santa Clarita River Rally, volunteered at the Monster Dash at Nancy’s Ranch, and assembled Foster Care Backpacks for Child and Family Services. In December, they helped decorate the SC Convalescent Hospital and wrapped gifts for the clients. They decorated and delivered cookies for the Santa Clarita Shelter. Every spring, Assisteens plan and host a party at LARC Ranch for the residents, complete with food, music and dancing. Again, the teens were on hand to assist with Assistance League’s Operation School Bell 5K Run Walk. Assisteens Chairperson, Durinda Evanoff says “I think it is really important for teens to do hands on volunteer work to aid members of their community. Over my six years as part of the Assisteens organization, I have learned how rewarding it feels to help others who are in need.” For information about Assistance League and their Assisteens Auxiliary contact 661-296-3733 email ALsantaclarita.com, or visit their website www.assistanceleague-alsc.org.
