Culminating a year-long endeavor that demonstrates how youth can connect to each other and their community, students and community members of Santa Clarita came together to celebrate a partnership dedicated to supporting the need for arts programming in schools everywhere. Beat the Odds is a drum circle-based activity that seeks to maximize creative expression while building social and emotional skills, emphasizing the process of learning over performance.
On Friday, May 18, College of the Canyons’ Cougar Stadium hosted a community-wide effort to break a record for the world’s largest drum circle, raising awareness for arts programs being cut in schools throughout the nation.  The new world record is estimated at around 10,000 people from public schools and community members from all across southern California.  The effort successfully broke the Guinness World Record for the largest drum circle, previously held at a venue in China in 2007, consisting of about 9,000 people.
