He’s the man behind the scenes…Clint Eastwood’s right hand man when it comes to film editing, and while he’s etched his name on the big screen, he’s making his name in wine as well. Oscar winner Joel Cox has a long list of film credits, including Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, Mystic River, Unforgiven and more recently American Sniper, to name a few, and now you can add award-winning wine to his long list of credits.
Not only has the Oscar winner found success in film, but he’s also found it on the vineyards. With a love for Paso Robles and its beautiful vineyards, Joel’s dream of owning property came true with the purchase of some land nestled in the beautiful hills of San Miguel. Its name, Mystic Hills Vineyard, is derived from the air of mystery as the morning fog envelops the land and vines. The first vines were planted in 2007, on empty land.
In love with wine and winemaking, Joel also teamed up with winemaker Keith Roberts, who also shares his passion for wine. “I am so blessed to have such a remarkable growing team,” says Keith. “Our wines express the dedication and commitment of the Cox family has to make great wine.”
The first year’s 2011 release has already won 10 medals, including a Gold Medal for the 2011 Unforgiven, a name inspired by the Eastwood directed film. “This indeed is a grand accomplishment,” says Keith. “The vineyard is operated el natural with few inputs. I am in it every day carefully inspecting the plants and growing flavors. This year we have added nothing more than a bit of seaweed, and were able to exclude any fungicide and insect sprays. The lack of chemicals contributes to soft and pleasing wines with bold flavors.” Grapes are handpicked and sorted by each varietal, spending more than two years in oak barrels to ensure consistent balance and character. The 2012 release will be available later this year. “The wine tastes great and we assure you that the quality will make us all smile.”
“Every day is full of ideas, plans, goals, and of course, dreams of all that Mystic Hills Vineyard is and will become in the years ahead. We all hope that, when all is said and done, we leave a legacy to our children and our children’s children,” says Joel.
