Trends in Wedding Cakes & Pastry Tables
In preparation for our bi-annual Bridal edition, I recently read an article online about current wedding food trends. It got me thinking about how talented the pastry chefs are in Santa Clarita, and how on point they are with current market trends. Proof to the naysayers that Santa Clarita is just as refined as other popular wedding So Cal cities.
As a long time resident, and 10-year veteran at Prime Publications, I can remember the spark that started fire—The Sweet Charity Cake Auction, benefitting the SCV Youth Project. Just eight years ago the very 1st Sweet Charity Cake Auction & Competition was held, and introduced Santa Clarita to the wonderful world of cake design. Always a staple in Santa Clarita, Jill’s Cake Creations has been involved each year, and raises the bar with every competition held. There is no feat that Jill can’t conquer or idea she can’t create. A true SCV pastry veteran, Jill Phillips has been satisfying the dreams of brides in Santa Clarita for more than 36 years. Have you seen her buttercream-frosted creations? They are to die for!
So what did this do for wedding trends, you may ask? It opened the door for outside of the box themes and intricate designs that would fill any bride’s dreams with happiness for a lifetime. We are now seeing exotic cake design, partnered with extravagant table displays filled with various pastries complimenting the event menu and theme. Fondant is still a wedding favorite for a sleek, clean design but any experienced pastry chef knows that buttercream is the way to go for taste. TheKnot.com recently highlighted 15 Hot Wedding Cake Trends and I was so happy to see Buttercream Frosted Cakes as 13 on their list. Also making the top picks are metallic, ruffled, naked(very new trend), white-on-white, painted, lace, woodland/rustic, geometric, rosette, sugar flower bouquets, illustrated, ombre and trio cakes or quintet tables. These new trends open even more doors for pastry chef’s to hone their skills to new heights.
Chef Mandana Mirbabak of H&M Cakes & Pastries began her career in a savory kitchen, but soon found her true passion for sweets and adjusted her focus to accommodate her love of baking and creating. And after seeing her unique artistry, event after event, it is clear she chose the right path to pursue. From delicately decorated wedding shower cookies to the grand finale cutting of the cake, H&M Cakes & Pastries packs creativity and caring into each bite of food they make.
One company that has taken the spatula and ran with an original idea is Nothing Bundt Cakes. Born for a love of quality ingredients and the perfect taste, Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz created a brand and used a shape that has grown to a nationwide phenomenon. With their signature recipe and design, it’s no wonder why the nation has embraced this delicious concept.
So what does this tell us about the future of pastries? There is absolutely no limit to what can be imagined and created, so dream your heart out girls—and remember to “Let them eat cake”!
