Where are you going? is a question often heard on high school campuses all over the nation at this time of year. Seniors who have worked with great diligence for more than a dozen years are pondering their next chapters of life. For the graduating class at Saugus High School, choices come in a wide variety. More than 200 Centurion graduates are off to four-year colleges and universities to further their educational options. A small sampling of these include Stanford, Cal Berkley, UCLA, USC, Penn, Duke, Brown, Fresno State, Oregon, Baylor, Arizona, Alabama, Washington, NYU, Peabody (Johns Hopkins), Columbia, and The Master’s College. Saugus has at least one student who will be attending each of the Cal State schools as well as every campus in the UC system. Another 300 will be entering community colleges, trade schools, and vocational programs in the fall. The balance will be joining the work force or enlisting in a branch of the United States military.
Yes, the question of “Where are you going?” is a topic of great conversation, but the seniors at Saugus High School have been asking a different question for the last four years… “How are we going to get there?”  The preparation for post-secondary readiness began when they entered their freshman year.  Through exceptional guidance offered by counselors, teachers, coaches, advisors, and administrators, the Class of 2013 has been immersed in a setting that prizes academic excellence, athletic distinction, positive social development, and an appreciation for the arts.
Students who are vested in their high school campus and local community are far more likely to experience successful endeavors in their college and career pathways.  More than one-third of all graduating seniors at Saugus High School this year have participated on an athletic team. Over 150 have been a part of the performing arts programs (Choir, Band, Color Guard, Theater, and Dance).  Through various service and leadership based club affiliations, like ASB, Key Club, National Honor Society, and others, students are focused on more than just what they can GET from the world. They are making an impact by how much they can GIVE to their school and community. They are often seen volunteering at events like Relay for Life, SCV Senior Center (Thanksgiving Dinner), Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club (Festival of Trees), the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, as well as outreach opportunities through their churches and synagogues.  Graduates from Saugus High are making a difference!
Academically, the graduates of Saugus High are among the best prepared statewide for what lies ahead in college and in the workforce. Of the 565 graduates, 116 have attained the status of Honor Scholar (3.75 GPA or higher).  Many of this year’s seniors participated in the Advanced Placement program which had over 950 exams administered during the month of May.  Through career pathways, the Saugus graduate has significant options to explore and develop career and vocational goals while in high school.
So, while others are pondering the question, “Where are you going?” the Saugus High School Class of 2013 is ready, well equipped, and eager to answer with confidence, “We’re Going Places!”
