Fashion has transcended over the past 20 years.  One of the strongest looks of the 1980s was power dressing.  Women took control of their careers and it showed in fashion with tweed material, plaid prints, tailored pantsuits and skirts that were worn below the knee.  Oh and don’t forget shoulder pads, the classic staple of ‘80s business fashion.

As women progressed into the ‘90s, fashion drastically changed – less became more.  Women rebelled against the tailored and masculine look and let their hair down, sans hairspray.  Casual became the new black.  Remnants of the 80s were still around for the first years of the 90s and particularly in provincial areas.  Short above the knee straight skirts, stirrup ski pants and
leggings were worn with long chenille yarn sweater tunics, oversized shoulder padded shirts and big embellished t-shirts.
Once the millennium came around, all bets were off.  Designers began making ready to wear versions of their runway designs.  Americans grasped fashion in a whole new way. The best-known designers such as Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren ruled the runway and the register.  Less focus was put towards business fashion.  The loud and earth-toned basics with dark accents of the 90s were gone.  Khaki’s and white t-shirts were covered with a navy blazer and casual Fridays took over the workweek.
Today fashion has given a slight nod to the 80s with tweed, plaid and pantsuits, while retaining the flair and colorful accents of the 90s.  As we move into 2010, one can only imagine what we can expect – bright color, big hair or maybe even the return of the shoulder pad, the imagination runs wild.
