by Katy Doyle Times have been tough all over economically. So, élite took a moment to ask the incoming chair of the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce, Bill Kennedy, a few questions about how the economy is affecting our valley, our chamber and our small business owners. élite: What are your past affiliations with the Chamber and with SCV businesses in general? BILL KENNEDY: I have been a member of the Chamber since 2001, and have served on the Board of Directors for the past three years. I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Valley Industrial Association and the San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley Habitat for Humanity. I am on the city Planning Commission and on the College of the Canyons Foundation. Finally, I stay in touch with various businesses in the area through my consulting services, Wingspan Business Consulting. é: As chair of the SCV Chamber of Commerce, what are your plans? BK: My principle plan is to improve on our execution of our mission to promote business successfully in the Santa Clarita Valley. To accomplish that, we will maintain a laser-like focus on providing value to members. Support of the Enterprise Zone, establishment of a local economic development corporation, greater emphasis on programs that benefit our member businesses, promotion of the “Shop Local” campaign, to include more business-to-business interaction, and advocacy for a more business-friendly environment in California will be core elements of our efforts this year. é: What obstacles is the Chamber facing in this challenging economy? BK: There is no doubt that 2009 will be a very interesting year, with a new government administration, an inflection point in our economy, and an uncertain business environment. One advantage we have in the Santa Clarita Valley is that we have not suffered the full effects of the economic contraction that many communities have experienced, primarily due to our diversified base of business and industry, a tribute to the city’s efforts to create a business-friendly environment. é: What are the advantages for local businesses to become or remain Chamber members at this time? BK: I expect to grow our member rolls in 2009, mainly because many businesses are realizing that the best way to meet challenging times is to cultivate allies, and joining the Chamber is the single best way to do that. When a business joins the Chamber, they immediately add a professional team of advisors to their company, made up not only of the Chamber staff, but also fellow members who embody the expertise that can and will help them manage the financial, organizational, marketing or related issues they face every day. Our mantra for membership this year is simple, yet profound; “Your Chamber, now more than ever!” For more information please visit www.scvchamber.com. |
