A Legacy of Service: Honoring Jim Brush’s 20 Years of Giving Back
There are individuals whose generosity quietly shapes a community, not through grand gestures, but through steady presence, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to service. Jim Brush is one of those people. For the past 20 years, Jim has been a devoted volunteer at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, giving more than 6,000 hours of his time to support patients, staff, and the greater Santa Clarita Valley.
Jim began volunteering on November 30, 2005, shortly after retiring from a successful career in the automotive industry, where he worked as both an engineer and an auditor. Retirement, however, did not mark a slowing down, it marked a shift. Known for his strong work ethic and volunteer spirit, Jim had already spent many years serving through Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and the Knights of Columbus. Continuing to give back felt natural, and Henry Mayo became the perfect place to channel his skills and heart for service.
He joined the hospital’s Volunteer Shuttle Program, where his professionalism, management experience, and genuine care for people made an immediate impact. Whether assisting patients, supporting visitors, or helping staff, Jim brought a calm, reassuring presence to every interaction. Over time, his willingness to help wherever needed led him to volunteer at numerous hospital and community events, including Relay for Life, the Annual Golf Tournament, and the Grand Opening of the Hospital Tower.
One of Jim’s most meaningful contributions came through his love of photography. What began as a personal passion soon became a valuable resource for the hospital. Recognizing his talent, the Public Relations Department invited Jim to photograph community outreach and internal events. He gladly accepted, and soon his familiar presence, camera in hand, became a welcome sight at hospital functions. Through his lens, Jim helped preserve countless moments that celebrate the people, milestones, and mission of Henry Mayo.
Over the years, Jim’s dedication earned him recognition as an Auxiliary Lifetime Member, a reflection of both his longevity and the deep appreciation held for him by the hospital community. Yet for Jim, volunteering has never been about accolades, it has always been about showing up and making a difference.
There is a particularly special connection between Jim and Henry Mayo that makes his service even more meaningful. In a touching full-circle moment, Jim’s daughter was the seventh baby born at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. Adding to that legacy, three of his four grandchildren were also born at Henry Mayo, further deepening his family’s lifelong connection to the hospital. Years later, he would return not as a patient or family member, but as a volunteer who would spend two decades giving back to the very place that played a role in his family’s story.Jim Brush’s 20 years of service stand as a testament to the power of volunteerism. His story reminds us that retirement can be the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with purpose, connection, and lasting impact. Through his time, talents, and generous spirit, Jim has left an indelible mark on Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and on the community it serves.
