From Diver to Legend: The Journey of Jeff Stabile

When Jeff Stabile moved from Illinois to California with his family in 1979 he was devastated to learn that the high school he would soon enter had no springboard diving team. A diver since age 12, he joined the Holiday Aquatics Diving club team in the San Fernando Valley while in Placerita Junior High and, within six months, became a nationally-ranked diver, placing 17th in the country in his age group. When he entered William S Hart High School the following fall, Jeff spoke with the swim coach who gave him the role as the student-coach for the newly formed diving team. Already, his leadership was being recognized by his peers and other athletes. By his senior year, the team had grown from two to sixteen members and Jeff had earned four silver medals at the CIF Championships.
After being accepted into the University of California, San Diego, Jeff became a diving legend when he swept the NCAA Division III National Championships during his freshman and sophomore years. He transferred to UCLA as a junior and competed in the NCAA Division I and PAC-12 Championships. Immediately after graduating UCLA in 1989, he began his coaching career at Occidental College. A year later, while still coaching at Occidental, he joined the newly established Rose Bowl Aquatics Diving Team. He now coaches his own team, Tropic Lightning, in Honolulu.
Over the years, Jeff has shared his guidance and expertise with hundreds of divers, including national champions, national qualifiers and finalists, along with some 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials qualifiers.
Throughout this time, Jeff had been dealing with pain from a partially herniated vertebrae in his lower spine which sometimes severely impacted his ability to dive. While this injury in 1987 could have spelled the end of his diving career, Jeff refused to leave the sport he loved. After a three-month recovery, Jeff was back on his feet and although this injury still sometimes bothers him, you wouldn’t know by looking at his athletic achievements. When Jeff Stabile isn’t coaching, he is competing as a Master’s Athlete. Overall, he has won twelve Pan American Championship titles – in 2013, 2015, and 2018. He has won ten World Championships as well, in 2015, 2019, and 2023.
In addition to coaching and competing, in 2008, Jeff found his way into judging the NCAA competitions he had previously competed in during his time in college. Jeff also began judging internationally in 2008, officiating at the Junior Pan American Championships, Junior World Championships, Grand Prix Invitationals, World University Games, World Series Events, World Cups, and World Championships. This opportunity has opened many doors for the international athlete. As a pioneer in the sport, Jeff Stabile is now being recognized for his achievements within the competitive diving scene. In 2022, he was inducted into the Hawaii Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame. His proficiency as an international judge has not gone unnoticed as in the summer of 2024, he will be traveling to Paris for the honor of judging at the Olympic Games.
A teacher of Deaf and Hard of Hearing middle and high school students, Jeff currently resides in Honolulu with his husband, Siew, and their cats. Although he is not sure which Olympic diving events he will be judging, he does know that international rules will prevent him from participating in final events for which a U.S. diver has qualified. One thing is certain though: this Santa Claritan will be at the Centre Aquatique Olympique supporting not only the U.S. Diving Team but all the divers who are pursuing their quest for the Gold.
