From Lady Gaga to Holiday Commercials Filming in the SCV Remains Strong
This year has brought unprecedented circumstances that have reshaped the way we live our lives. Businesses and organizations throughout Santa Clarita, including schools, restaurants and retailers, have had to get creative to ensure residents get the same quality of product or service. In addition, film productions have returned to the City, beginning to once again showcase Santa Clarita’s diverse set of filming locations that have appeared on the big and small screen. This month we are celebrating the women who are owning the starring role in local film productions.
Earlier this year in May, the enigmatic Lady Gaga released Chromatica: her sixth studio album. With 16 tracks and a runtime of 44 minutes, the record is filled with electronic dance tracks alongside brief orchestral suites, making this album a fun-filled listen. The music video for the track 911 is an equally colorful experience featuring Gaga in a series of elaborate gowns with an old Spanish town in the background. But did you know that set is located right here in Santa Clarita at Veluzat Movie Ranch?
After five years of the hit television show “The Fosters,” the spinoff show Good Trouble filmed on-location in Santa Clarita, giving us another show to binge watch through the holiday season. Set in present-day Los Angeles, two adopted sisters Callie and Mariana Foster, star in this coming-of-age tale of two young women breaking the norms of a sexist work environment, working through their troubled past and growing into strong, determined women. In addition to the crew, the show is also executive produced by Hollywood legend Jennifer Lopez, who has starred in countless films including “Monster in Law” (2005) starring the iconic Jane Fonda, “Maid in Manhattan” (2002) and more recent films like “Hustlers” (2019) featuring Cardi B.
“Penny Dreadful,” a British-American television series, has also filmed a majority of its newest season in Santa Clarita at a local movie ranch. Season one of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” takes place in 20th Century Los Angeles, where Detective Tiago Vega and his partner are dragged into a gruesome murder case. At the center of the season is Natalie Dormer, whose acting skills are put to the test as she executes a flawless performance as four different characters, including an evil demon, a German bombshell beauty, an unconventional civil servant and an exuberant socialite. The Showtime series received positive reviews, but it was ultimately not renewed for a second season.
With the holiday season right around the corner, retailers have already started ramping up their advertising to make sure every family has what they need before the new year. Retailers, including Target, Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes, have filmed holiday ads in Santa Clarita, which will premiere in the coming weeks.
As you can see, there is much to anticipate as numerous productions continue to film in Santa Clarita. You can learn more about what has filmed in our City on FilmSantaClarita.com or connect on Instagram @FilmSantaClarita.
