Woke Up At The Hotel Californian!
We were recently invited to visit the fabulous Hotel Californian, a 121-room boutique hotel located on State and Mason Street in Santa Barbara. The hotel location is perfect, walk one block west and you’ll reach the beach and Fisherman’s Wharf, there’s also a jogging and biking path that hugs the shore. Two blocks north of the hotel is the Funk Zone, Santa Barbara’s arts district with galleries, restaurants and more than 20 wine tasting rooms.
With its Moroccan-themed interiors and Andalusian accents throughout, the Hotel Californian, is the vision of Michael Rosenfeld, founder and developer of the property. He brought together a talented team, including the Santa Barbara architectural firm DesignArc and the celebrated designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Bullard’s stunning million-tiled interior, with its clean lines and velvet touches of opulence, gives the hotel its eye-fascinating look, a Moroccan twist on the California beach lifestyle
In 2021 the hotel was purchased by wine magnate Bill Foley of the Foley Entertainment Group, hence the recent addition of The Society: State & Mason tasting room, where we were greeted by Tammy who had an extensive knowledge of the delicious wines they were serving, pictured on this page is Tammy with her assistant Heaven.
The executive chef Travis Watson, elevates beach-adjacent dining throughout the property. The airy, market-style cafe Goat Tree offers inspired breakfast entrees such as shakshuka, a Middle Eastern dish of baked eggs. For dinner, a finer dining restaurant, Blackbird, serves artfully plated Mediterranean fare. The hotel’s room service menu offers a more standard assortment of burgers, salads and sandwiches.
Amenities at the hotel include a small gym which has up-to-date machines and can be accessed anytime with a key card, a swimming pool, firepit and pool loungers line the fourth floor rooftop. There is a Moroccan-themed spa Majorelle, which offers an array of treatments.
Our room was quiet, spacious, very clean and comfy. Room service was efficient and always on time. We would highly recommend a stay here. For more information visit: www.hotelcalifornian.com.

There’s a reason the classic TV show Cheers still resonates: it painted a picture of a place where you could walk in, feel instantly welcomed, and know you belonged. A place where people didn’t just know your name — they knew your story. In many ways, that same spirit...
