Women in Art
Art in Santa Clarita knows no bounds and welcomes creativity from all experience levels, ages, genders, cultures and more. Residents and visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a large variety of art, including unique exhibitions, countless public art fixtures with a historical flair and numerous original theater productions. Artist and art spectators alike are sure to find creative works that pique their interest in Santa Clarita.
If you are an artist who works in mediums such as painting, pen and ink, photography and textiles, consider submitting your work to open calls for artists with the City of Santa Clarita’s Arts Division. Accepted submissions are featured in galleries at City facilities, the Westfield Valencia Town Center and other local facilities. Find an upcoming art exhibit that is best suited for your skills and interests by visiting SantaClaritaArts.com/CallsForEntries.
Some recent exhibits showcasing talented female artists include “Follow Your Art” in the First Floor Gallery at Santa Clarita City Hall, which allowed mixed-media artists like Nancy Goodman Lawrence to showcase multiple unique works that incorporate maps. Another gallery, “Through Our Eyes: The Art of Contemporary Native America,” welcomed the use of diverse materials and techniques from Native artists Peggy Fontenot, Nadia Reed and others. If sculpting is your medium of choice, stay abreast of installation requests in the City, much like the temporary trailhead art piece “Growing Wings” by Hilde DeBruyne. This is only a glimpse at the varied exhibitions that feature female artists showcasing their craft while also expanding their audience in the community.
In addition to art exhibitions, those in performing arts continue to be seen and heard across Santa Clarita. Are you a playwright, director or owner of a production company? Bring your story to life at The MAIN in Old Town Newhall. The 81-seat theatre provides an intimate setting for your plays, performances and films. The MAIN regularly collaborates with local theatre companies to bring original works and adaptations to life for residents and visitors of Santa Clarita. As the theater gears up for the 2022 season, attendees can look forward to upcoming women-led productions such as The Real Housewives of Troy, Nancy Who? The Girl Detective Without a Clue! and many more.
If you seek a different format for your storytelling, comedy, magic or musical skills, participate in community-favorite, “10 by 10” Variety Night, at The MAIN. No two shows are alike for this fun event hosted on the first Thursday each month. “10 by 10” welcomes ten entertainers to the stage for a ten-minute performance of their choosing. Amateurs, world-renowned entertainers and everyone in between have taken their talents to the stage for this variety night event. Stay up to date on upcoming productions and calls for submissions by monitoring Facebook.com/TheMAINNewhall.
