From Space to the House: Congressman George Whitesides’ Mission to Serve CA-27
Before he was representing California’s 27th District in Congress, George Whitesides was a kid captivated by the cosmos. Growing up, he poured over astronaut biographies, dreamed of rocket launches, and attended U.S. Space Camp — an early sign of the trajectory his life would take. That passion led to leadership roles at NASA and Virgin Galactic, where he helped build out America’s next chapter in space exploration. But it’s his deep sense of service and problem-solving that ultimately drew him from the launchpad to Capitol Hill.
As a Fulbright Scholar in Tunisia, Whitesides gained a global perspective that shaped his leadership style and desire to bridge divides. That mindset is one he brings with him into Congress — where bipartisan action isn’t just a talking point, but a priority. “My job, first and foremost, is to be an advocate for our district,” he says. “I’ll work with anyone, regardless of party, to help solve real problems.”
Whitesides brings both private and public sector experience to his role. As CEO of Virgin Galactic, he created hundreds of good-paying jobs in the Antelope Valley. As NASA’s former Chief of Staff, he knows how effective government can work. Now, in Congress, he’s using that experience to push forward innovative legislation — including the bipartisan DOE and NASA Interagency Research Coordination Act, aimed at turbocharging collaboration in energy and aerospace tech.
Wildfire resilience is another cornerstone of his agenda. Having witnessed devastating fires firsthand, he co-founded Megafire Action, a nonprofit dedicated to fire prevention. Now, in office, he’s leading with science and solutions. His Fix Our Forests Act and BRUSH Fires Act aim to modernize how we manage wildfire threats, speed up environmental reviews, and better equip frontline communities across California.
Representing a district that includes Santa Clarita, the Antelope Valley, and parts of the San Fernando Valley, Whitesides makes a point of staying visible and accessible. His district offices help constituents navigate federal agencies, and he’s regularly meeting with families, veterans, and small business owners to stay in tune with their needs.
He’s also a champion for care workers and immigrant communities, advocating for better pay, conditions, and recognition for those who support the aging and vulnerable. “When we invest in caregivers, we strengthen families, communities, and the economy,” he says.
Balancing the demands of public office with family life is no easy task, especially with weekly cross-country flights between D.C. and home. Still, Whitesides remains grounded — calling his family every night, and drawing strength from his upbringing in a household that valued education and curiosity.
Looking ahead, his goals remain clear: lower costs for families, expand access to housing, create jobs, and improve public safety. As the district evolves, so does his commitment to staying responsive and results-driven. “Every initiative I’ve taken on has been shaped by conversations with our community,” he says. “That’s how I plan to continue serving — by listening, learning, and leading together.”
