Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc. Continues to Serve the Community
As the demand for affordable and accessible healthcare services continues to rise – and the number of uninsured individuals and families remains as a result of unemployment, homelessness, and other economic disadvantages – Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc. (SDFHC) has been a fixture in the Santa Clarita community, providing primary care services to meet the growing need. The mission of SDFHC is to enhance wellness by providing quality outpatient health care services, health education, community resources and referrals with a special effort to serve the uninsured, under-insured and underserved communities.
With costs of healthcare on the rise, as well as the cost of providing support and services to the uninsured, SDFHC provides a wide range of high-quality primary care services that include family medicine, family planning, minor illness and injury, chronic disease management, physical exams, women’s health, cancer detection and prevention, prenatal and well child visits, immunizations, health education, dental care, mental/behavioral health counseling, specialty referrals, and enrollment assistance.
Governed by an all-local board of directors, SDFHC is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and the only group of health centers founded and based in the Santa Clarita Valley. The organization was founded more than 36 years ago in memory of Reverend Samuel Dixon and is supported by the generosity of grants, individual donations and special events.
Although SDFHC is not a free clinic, no patient is ever turned away based on an inability to pay. Patients who fall at or below 100 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and do not have insurance coverage are charged $36, which covers their entire health care visit from labs to imagining services and even specialty referrals. Approximately 75 percent of all SDFHC patients are at or below the FPL.
SDFHC’s signature fundraiser, the Rubber Ducky Festival, is now in its 14th year! Yearly proceeds from the Rubber Ducky Festival fund patient visits for the uninsured and underinsured. In 2015, the Rubber Ducky Festival event raised enough money to pay for 2,200 patient visits for our uninsured and underinsured family, friends and neighbors! When you support the event, you are directly helping individuals receive the care they need when they might otherwise not be able to afford or have access to them.
This year’s Rubber Ducky Festival will take place on Saturday, October 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bridgeport Park in Valencia. The free, family festival includes a manmade pond and raceway, plenty of children games and activities, free prizes and giveaways, and 5,000 rubber ducks entered into the race – all competing for the top cash prizes of $2,500, $1,500 and $500. Individual rubber ducks are available for adoption at just $5 per duck! Adopt your ducks today by visiting duckrace.com/scv.
